The first-person narrator of the novel is 17-year-old Eva, a high school dropout who lives in a small Italian village in the late 1950s. As a child, Eva was raised by her grandmother and lived in the local cemetery, where she learned how to read from her grandmother's book of spells. The book contains spells for everything from cooking to fortune-telling. When Eva's mother died, her father took the book and hid it in the attic, refusing to give it back to Eva. Eva is now back in the cemetery, and it's all she can think about.
In her grief, Eva becomes obsessed with her memories of her grandmother and her world in the cemetery. She finds herself drawn back there, not just to escape her life in the village, but to find out what happened to her grandmother and her world. In order to understand her grandmother's death, Eva needs to find out what happened to the other people who lived in the cemetery, who left behind their own secrets.
