It's the last day of school before summer vacation, and Serena Santos is getting ready to pack her bags and say goodbye to her friends and classmates. Serena is a senior in high school and is on the verge of moving on to college, so she's not going to make any friends in college that she didn't make in high school. As Serena's mom helps her pack, she reflects on her time at her old school and the people she met. She remembers meeting a girl named Kate, who was the most popular girl in school. Kate made Serena's life difficult, but they still managed to be friends. They shared a secret that they would only tell each other, which was that they both had a crush on the same boy, who Serena's mom just couldn't stand. When Serena's mom found out, she told Kate she was not welcome in their house anymore. Kate has never been back since then.
