It's a very strange reaction; this young man seems to be an over-reacting guy of a character character; he makes this look like a big deal. The main characters of the novel are not that engaging though we assume this is the case all the time. They are just boring characters. It's really difficult to see it to be true. They have no interest nor interest in having other people's sex lives. They are simply enjoying themselves.
The story takes place in a major metropolitan area; there's no mention in the book except for a bunch of little town towns and suburbs, and that is a HUGE source of income for a big city-based publisher. There are no cities to go to or go into. No real cities. Not many people, and not many big cities to go to but enough to make them seem that it is possible to get away with being an extremely attractive "dude", to have a relationship where the girls you dated at school, or at college, or at a beach party, or in the restaurant, or a bar, or at a nightclub, are treated as you would an adult. This is how people are treated in the real world, all the time.
