On January 23, the Pentagon announced that the U.S. had spent $3.8 billion so far fighting the Vietcong. But, with the war already over, the Pentagon was less committed to the U.S.-Lebanese goal of a negotiated peace.
"We are very cautious, very concerned. We have had very important conversations and are very engaged in them now," said retired Gen. James Amos, commander of U.S. forces in Vietnam, who helped organize the war.
He added, "We can't let this happen to anybody. They are here. They deserve it. There's no reason for us to not go out and engage with them. This just goes back to what they were when we left. We can't let that happen"
