In this series, the central character is a young Dominican woman named Gloria. The novel begins with her meeting a man in a bus terminal who introduces himself as Santiago. Santiago is a well-dressed, well-spoken man with a Spanish accent. He takes Gloria on a long walk, and they stop at a place that Santiago calls the Santo Domingo Connection. They find an old, dilapidated building with windows boarded up, and inside is an old, broken piano and a dusty record player. The record player is working, and it plays a song about Gloria and Santiago, but it's unclear whether it's a song from the future or from the past. They decide to stay in the building and watch the stars, but they're interrupted by a group of police officers who tell them they're not allowed to be there. The novel follows Gloria and Santiago's relationship through this building, and it's a story of hope, romance, and self-discovery.
