The setting for this book is contemporary. It is a perfect day for shopping in New York City. All the stores are full of people who are just enjoying themselves. In the middle of all the chaos, a woman sits on a park bench. The woman is named Chitra, and she is from India. She has come to New York to find a man to marry her. Chitra was the only child of her parents, so she has been waiting a long time to find a husband. She has been saving up money to make the trip and she is now down to her last dollar. Chitra's family thought that she would come back with a man and they would be able to finally have grandchildren, but she is not so sure that will happen. She looks at the people on the street, thinking that they are all so different and maybe they won't like her.
