This novel follows the journey of an Irish immigrant family in the late 1800s who find themselves struggling to survive after being caught up in the Potato Famine. As they travel across America to escape the starvation, they meet up with a family who takes them in and helps them find work. This family is also struggling and they ask the mother, Mary, to marry one of the sons. Mary agrees, but not without a promise to the daughter, Cissy, that she will have her own room and a certain amount of time to herself every day. After a few years of marriage, Mary realizes that she's unhappy with her marriage and life in America. She finds out that her son's fiancee is pregnant and leaves her son for her daughter. The son is heartbroken and so is his daughter. They take it out on each other and turn to alcohol for comfort. After a night of drinking, Cissy runs away from home. The son has a hard time finding her and decides to end his life. The novel is about a family coming together after tragedy, trying to make peace and coming out stronger for it.
