You’ve been invited to a Cinco de Mayo party. You arrive to find your friend is already there, but they’ve been left out of the festivities. You head inside to find that the whole house is decked out in Mexican flags and colorful decor. You enter the kitchen to find your friend, the teen, sneaking a few sips of beer. You can tell they’re upset and decide to confront them. “You should be out there with everyone else,” you say. The teen just shrugs and says, “It’s too crowded.” You take them by the hand and lead them outside. You find them a spot to sit in the shade and start to mingle. After a while, you look back and find your friend standing in the doorway, staring out at the party. You walk over and say, “Hey, what’s up?” They look up at you and say, “I want to go back inside.” You nod and say, “I know you do. But I don’t want you to get hurt. This is your house and it’s your party. I know you’re sad that you can’t join in, but I want you to know that I’m with you. I’ll always be with you.” You take them by the hand and head back inside. The two of you spend the rest of the day together, catching up on old times and enjoying your shared space.
